Christopher Wood British, 1901-1930
Reclining Nude (Jeanne Bourgoint), 1926
oil on canvas
19 x 33 ins / 48.3 x 83.8 cm
The simple effect of Nude belies the skilful execution of the drawn line, and yet it would not be correct to assume that this 'simplicity' was a signifier for Bourgoint's virtuousness. Rather her agile body, together with her flushed cheeks, is suggestive of an animal sexuality that was echoed by Wood when he described her as his 'adorable little hare'.
