William Nicholson's "The Fountains, Palais Royal," painted circa 1913, captures the serene elegance of Paris's Palais Royal gardens. This oil on canvas exemplifies Nicholson's adeptness at blending architectural elements with natural scenery. During the spring and summer of 1913, Nicholson resided in Paris, engaging in projects such as reverse glass paintings for the American playwright Edward Knoblock. This period in Paris profoundly influenced his work, leading to compositions that harmoniously balance structure and environment. The painting remained with the artist until it passed to Marguerite Steen, and later to the 13th Earl of Antrim in 1951.
