Ivon Hitchens' "Autumn Larch Forest," painted circa 1937, exemplifies his pioneering approach to landscape art, where abstraction and figuration converge to evoke the essence of the English woodland. In this work, Hitchens employs broad, fluid brushstrokes and a harmonious palette to distill the autumnal atmosphere of the larch forest. The painting's elongated horizontal format became a hallmark of Hitchens' work, first explored in the mid-1930s, and was instrumental in his representation of Britain at the 1956 Venice Biennale.
